Barefoot Massage & Illness: What Therapists Need to Know About Antibiotics

Working closely with clients means we’re exposed to everything — their stress, their pain… and sometimes, their germs. Knowing when it’s safe to work on someone who’s been sick (or taking antibiotics) is essential for protecting yourself, your clients, and your practice.

The basics:

  • Antibiotics treat bacterial infections, not viruses (like colds or flu).

  • Massage is contraindicated during active infection (fever, swelling, redness, malaise).

  • A common guideline: wait at least 3 days after starting antibiotics and ensure symptoms are resolved before resuming massage.

Every barefoot massage therapist should know how to screen clients, recognize red flags, and protect their own immune system — especially when working in close proximity.
