Course Overview: Floor work, mat modalities, and deep compressions can leave your wrists, knees, and back aching from constant palming, crouching, and crawling. Barefoot Matwork (formerly known as Fijian Barefoot Massage) is our 2-day (16 CE hour) feet-on training created for licensed massage therapists who want a versatile, portable way to deliver deep, restorative pressure without wrecking their own bodies. Grounded on the floor or seated comfortably in a chair, you will learn to use the dexterous tools of your feet to blend rhythmic compression, novel sensory input, and pain science principles to ease nervous system guarding… giving your fully clothed clients profound relief while giving yourself a truly career-sustaining movement practice.

Description

This Barefoot Matwork class (formerly known as “Fijian Barefoot Massage”) can be a starting point as your 1st barefoot massage class, as a supplement to any existing matwork you already provide, or it can be used to grow your existing barefoot vocabulary and master more skills applied by your feet.  Originally taught within the massage industry starting in the 1990’s, adapted and brought to the United States from the Fijian Islands by Lolita Knight, this lineage of matwork based barefoot massage is traditionally performed on a floor mat using body cushions, with the client clothed – but can easily be done directly on the clients skin with zero to minimal lubrication.

Class is 2 days, and you’ll earn 16 Continuing Education credits. (NCBTMB and some select states)

Therapists will learn:
  • Floor-based setup strategies using a variety of surfaces and bolstering options, including Thai/Shiatsu mats, body cushions, and low-seated ergonomic support

  • Lineage-rooted, science-backed barefoot techniques including rhythmic compression, elastic-barrier movement (“Eh-Eh”), chaotic jostling (“Sideways Wiggle”), and sustained holds

  • Structural body mechanics and seated posture to deliver deep, grounded work while taking the strain completely off your wrists, knees, and upper body

  • Essential anatomy, endangerment sites, and pathology-reviewed cautions/contraindications specific to floor-based compression and counterpressure

  • Turn-key, adaptable 30-minute clothed sequences for Side-Lying, Prone, and Supine body positions

  • Sensory modulation theory and modern pain science principles that explain how rhythmic barefoot touch disrupts protective holding patterns and recalibrates the nervous system

  • Practical methods to incorporate barefoot matwork into existing Thai, Shiatsu, or table sessions, or adapt it as a portable, low-overhead mobile modality

  • Pro-Tip To Prepare: Here’s a way to check and see if your feet are soft enough to do barefoot massage, with Mary-Claire Fredette
